Sofwave: A New Era of Non-Surgical Skin Tightening and Collagen Stimulation

What is Sofwave?

Sofwave is an FDA-cleared ultrasound technology that uses heat to stimulate collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This results in skin tightening, lifting and reduction of wrinkles. Sofwave can be used to treat volume loss, skin laxity, sagging, improve acne scars, and utilizes collagen banking for preventative aging. Sofwave has the ability to lift and tighten the jawline, improve neck skin laxity, reduce appearance of a “double chin,” lift brows, reduce wrinkles and lift jowls. 

Sofwave uses SUPERB technology. Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beams, delivered at a precise depth of 1.5 mm into the mid-dermis, where our collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid live. SUPERB technology delivers heat to this area to 65-70 degrees C, which is the optimal temperature needed to stimulate regeneration. Sofwave uses an integrated cooling system that keeps the skin surface cool, while providing real-time skin temperature monitoring. In addition to using the device’s customizable cooling modality, extra comfort from a cool air machine is provided to ensure a pleasant experience. Sofwave uses ultrasound heat so there is no disruption of the skin barrier, resulting in zero downtime. 

Sofwave utilizes a precise depth and temperature that is delivered to the dermis (where we have volume loss) without disrupting the epidermis—no needles, no skin breakdown. Because there are no needles and no disruption of the skin barrier, downtime is avoided. This also makes it safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types and can be done at any time of year. 

Which skin concerns does Sofwave address?

Sofwave is not just for skin laxity and tightening, but it also provides biostimulation. Stimulating collagen, elastin & hyaluronic acid allows our skin to appear firmer, smoother and more hydrated. This is a great introduction if you want to dip into the “anti-aging treatment” pond. It’s quick, no downtime, comfortable, and provides a natural yet noticeable improvement to the skin. This makes it great for people in their mid 20’s for collagen banking, to those in their 70’s for lifting jowls and neck tightening. 

Sofwave also helps improve texture such as acne scarring. With collagen and elastin production and the skin being more taught, acne scars appear softer and smoother. This is what makes Sofwave a great option for acne scarring patients who are Fitzpatrick V-VI since there is no disruption of the skin barrier, eliminating the risk of PIH. 

What should I expect from the treatment? 

The number of treatments needed will be determined by a provider during your consultation. On average, 1-3 treatments are needed, spaced 3 months apart. You can expect to see results as soon as 1 month which continues to improve for 3 months, the duration of the natural collagen and elastin regenerative process. Results typically last up to one year. Subsequent yearly treatments may be needed to maintain optimal results, usually 1-2 times annually after the first series of treatments. Treatments can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the areas treated. 

Sofwave always uses precise temperatures to ensure patient safety while delivering an effective treatment. Because Sofwave does not disrupt the skin barrier and uses SofCool technology to keep the skin surface cool, discomfort is minimized. Topical numbing is applied before the procedure to add to patient comfort. 

Is there anything I should know for my appointment?

Assuming you have had a consultation with one of our providers and discussed a customized treatment plan, you will come in JECT preferably with the treatment area free of makeup. After taking pre-treatment photos and prepping the treatment area, we will apply ultrasound gel to the area. Treatments may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, during which you are lying down comfortably with your cool air chiller for comfort. When your treatment is over, your provider may choose to apply their favorite serum and or sunscreen and your skin may appear slightly pink and possibly a bit swollen. The redness and swelling may last about 24 hours, however swelling is usually mild depending on the treatment intensity. The next day, you may have some residual swelling which typically resolves in 3-5 days. Your aftercare regimen will be discussed with your provider during your treatment.

As always, please disclose all pertinent medical history to your provider, as this may affect your candidacy for the treatment. When discussing with your provider, it is important to consider your commitment to treatments to ensure optimal outcomes - i.e if your provider recommends 2-3 treatments for the best results.
