PDRN 101: Benefits, Results, and What to Expect

PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is the buzzy beauty ingredient making waves for its healing and anti-aging benefits. Derived from salmon DNA, it helps skin recover faster, boosts hydration, smooths texture, and even reduces downtime after treatments like microneedling and lasers, all with minimal risk of side effects.

It’s not every day that a skincare ingredient gets this much buzz, but PDRN has earned its spot in the spotlight. Often nicknamed the “salmon sperm” treatment, PDRN is a DNA-based compound with powerful healing and anti-inflammatory properties. First used in medicine to help wounds and burns heal faster, it’s now a favorite in aesthetic treatments for the way it hydrates, smooths, and refreshes the skin. Whether applied topically after microneedling or paired with other in-office services, PDRN delivers both an instant glow and lasting results — all while being safe for most skin types.

What is PDRN?

PDRN is the viral “salmon sperm” treatment! PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a DNA-derived product extracted from salmon gonads. It stimulates adenosine receptors, which are key players in promoting wound healing. It can be used in aesthetic practices topically after microneedling and laser treatments to increase results by its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties! It also improves skin hydration and texture and decreases downtime by facilitating healing. Additionally, it has little to no risk of immunological side effects, as the procedure to extract PDRN from the salmon sperm ensures the absence of active proteins and peptides that could trigger an immune response.

How does PDRN affect skin?

PDRN is well known for its positive effect on wound healing. It has been used for burns and diabetic wounds to improve wound re-epithelialization, decrease healing time, and facilitate blood flow to damaged tissues. By promoting secretion of growth factors and enhancing capillary formation, it has many uses within the medical and aesthetic industries.

Specifically in aesthetic practices, PDRN can improve the skin’s hydration, texture, and fine lines by supporting cellular turnover, collagen production, and blood flow. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It can be delivered into the dermis to support skin rejuvenation and decrease downtime after microneedling and laser treatments.

Are vegan forms of PDRN effective? Why or why not?

True salmon-derived PDRN has many clinical studies supporting its regenerative properties, safety and efficacy in various patients, including burns and diabetic wounds. A few clinical studies have been done on ginseng-derived PDRN, but none comparing their efficacy to salmon-derived PDRN, which is the gold standard of PDRN. Our pharmaceutical partner Rejuran promotes that salmon are not harmed or killed during the harvesting of PDRN.

How quickly can you see results from a PDRN topical?

Applying PDRN topically after a microneedling treatment will yield an immediate glow! This potent anti-aging formula helps support natural cell regeneration while deep hydration promotes a healthier-looking complexion. The signs of aging are reversed as a visibly smoother texture is improved and the look of damaged skin is reduced.

As with any skin service, repetition is the key to long lasting results! The most transformative changes are seen after a series of 3-4 microneedling with PDRN treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Which are your favorite PDRN products?

Healing Essence by Rejuran is formulated with 2% Hydrolyzed DNA (High Molecular Weight) for skin rejuvenation. It is delivered into the dermis to support skin’s natural growth factors, thus promoting cellular turnover and collagen production, improving microcirculation and combating inflammation. It rehydrates severely dry skin and improves the skin’s natural barrier for a more luminous, translucent-looking skin.

Is PDRN safe for all skin types? Please explain

Yes, PDRN is safe for all skin tones! For any patient with an anaphylactic fish allergy, we would always recommend consulting with their primary care provider to discuss this treatment before booking.

Are there any side effects to consider when using a PDRN product?

A potential allergic reaction to PDRN itself is very rare but possible. Most side effects from a PDRN treatment will be related to the delivery mechanism - such as microneedling or laser - instead of the PDRN itself. Potential side effects of microneedling and lasers are rare but can include redness, potential bruising, purging (acne), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and scarring. Using appropriate post-treatment products, avoiding sun exposure, and wearing SPF and a large wide-brimmed visor or hat are great ways to decrease any potential adverse reactions!
